Where were we yesterday? From the MEN:

Internet and email access across parts of Britain was severed today after vandals set fire to network cables in Salford. Thousands of people also lost connection to phone lines with many companies standing to lose thousands of pounds in lost business.

The arson attacks on underground cables on Ordsall Lane and Trafford Road happened during the early hours. Firebugs are believed to have poured petrol from a wheelie bin down manholes before igniting the chambers, causing a series of explosions.

The blasts destroyed dozens of cable lines and damaged the main internet connection points between Manchester and Warrington and Manchester and London. The Lancashire and Shropshire areas have also been affected.

British Telecom were today re-routing a host of cable lines in order to
minimise disruption and said the clean-up operation would prove costly.

The attacks took place at 2.50am and 4am and a traffic lights control box in the area was also set on fire.

Andrew Clough, marketing manager at Cheadle-based Internet firm Total Web Solutions, said:

"This has caused us untold disruption. Our engineers have been in since first thing this morning trying to sort out the problem.

"A lot of businesses are going to be affected by what has happened."
