The Glasgow Daily Record report on a secret (or not so) meeting:

‘Staff in a small Scots restaurant were stunned when two of the biggest names in football dropped in for dinner. Sir Alex Ferguson and Celtic boss Martin O'Neill shocked diners in the little Capo Landa restaurant in Muirhead, North Lanarkshire, when they turned up for an Italian meal on Tuesday night.

‘Manchester United boss Sir Alex was in Glasgow ahead of Scotland's clash with Sweden last night. But he made time to catch up with Celtic manager Martin.

A source said: 'Sir Alex and Martin O'Neill ordered a bottle of our expensive red wine. It is a special wine that is not even on the menu and is very good quality. They sat in a booth and seemed to be very relaxed in each other's company. They chatted away for ages. They were in good spirits and signed a couple of autographs when they were approached by other diners.

'I think they were being driven by a chauffeur because they got really into the wine. After they had finished their dinner and coffee they ordered another bottle. They eventually left just before closing, at the back of 10. Both of them had a good drink and they definitely enjoyed themselves.’

Well whatever it was about, Fergie made an impression. O’Neill has been praising him to high heaven today:

“When people talk about modern day managers it is my own belief that he is the greatest in the game going back to when he took over at Manchester United. His record at Aberdeen for a provincial club, beating the Old Firm and taking the championship, was fantastic and he has gone on to prove himself at Manchester United.

“I know people think that he was a game away from getting the sack with that famous game at Nottingham Forest. But he turned that around with an unbelievable reign. It is an absolutely fantastic achievement to win the championship with any players but he has done it again and again despite having to change his side around with evolution.

“He has had great confidence to change it with the emergence of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and the rest. They won the championship again and his record has just been fantastic at a club the size of Manchester United. He is coming up to his 1,000th game in charge of the club and it is an absolutely remarkable achievement - and then you throw the Champions League and other successes in for good measure.

“I have the utmost admiration for him, and more than that, and I speak for every manager in European football.”
