Nottingham Forest make Dean Henderson approach

Nottingham Forest have made an offer to take Dean Henderson on loan from Manchester United, 90min understands.

The 25-year-old has made it clear to United that he wants to leave in order to secure first-team football and try and win back a place in the England squad ahead of the World Cup in November.

Henderson signed a new long-term deal at Old Trafford in 2020 after a hugely successful two-year loan spell at Sheffield United with the hope of displacing David de Gea, but the Spaniard has held off his competition and is even set to hold talks over a new deal.

A host of clubs have been looking at Henderson, who United are ready to let go, and they held talks with Newcastle before the Magpies backed away from a deal.

Championship sides Middlesbrough and Sunderland have been linked but Henderson wants to stay in the Premier League, and Forest are emerging as one of his most likely options.

However, Forest can only offer an initial loan and United will have to cover a big percentage of his wages.

Forest and United are on good terms following James Garner's loan. The young midfielder spent 18 months at the City Ground on loan.

Garner is unlikely to return to Forest as he hopes to impress new United boss Erik ten Hag, but they hope their relationship with the Red Devils will help secure a move for Henderson.

Forest need a goalkeeper after they learned that current number one Brice Samba had decided he did not want to sign a new deal with the club. French outfit Lens are ready to lodge a bid for is services.

Steve Cooper's side were already considering signing a new goalkeeper after sealing promotion via the play-offs, but Samba's intentions have accelerated Forest's need for a new stopper.

The club have looked at a number of options but the chance to take Henderson on loan is an option they have now decided to pursue.
