United are set to make a second bid to land Gareth Bale before Wednesday's deadline. United want to buy the whizkid and loan him back to Southampton until the end of the season.

Reds coaches Mike Phelan and Carlos Queiroz watched Bale as Southampton lost 3-1 at Manchester City in the FA Cup yesterday.

United have offered £8million but that has been topped by Tottenham's £10m bid.

Saints boss George Burley yesterday insisted:

“Gareth will be at the club until the end of the season — and hopefully one more season. This cup game was good experience for the boy. He is 17 and this was a big game.”
