Manchester United supporters accused Malcolm Glazer of drawing up a statement "as clear as the new offside rule".

And the fans remain adamant that a takeover cannot be allowed to happen as speculation continues to grow.

Billionaire American businessman Glazer has refused to rule out a bid to buy United.

Glazer, who last week increased his stake in the club to 16.31%, said he is considering his options and could increase his shareholding.
Fans pressure group Shareholders United have re-instated their commitment to fight against any single body that wants to try and take control of the club.

Spokesman Oliver Houston said:

"While we welcome that Malcolm Glazer has made his first public pronouncement - one that the takeover panel had to drag out of him - this supposed statement of intent is as clear as the new offside rule. Even if neither Cubic nor Glazer are making their moves with a prelude to a takeover they are clearly out to make a killing by flogging their shareholding to someone else”.
"These are both things that United fans and shareholders find deeply offensive - wealthy people who have no need trying to make even more money off the back of the loyalty of supporters”.

"The briefing coming from the Glazer camp is that he would either make overtures to fans or would seek to secure Sir Alex Ferguson's position (as manager). But we've had no overtures, no official or unofficial contact."

A statement released to the Stock Exchange yesterday read:

"The Malcolm I. Glazer Family Partnership notes the press speculation resulting from its increased shareholding in Manchester United Plc .The Malcolm I. Glazer Family Partnership is a long-time and enthusiastic supporter of Manchester United. The Malcolm I. Glazer Family Partnership has acquired shares in Manchester United because it has great admiration for Manchester United's rich history, loyal fans, great players, outstanding managers, winning tradition and for investment purposes.”

"As with any investment, it is considering its possible options, which may include increasing its shareholding or decreasing its shareholding in Manchester United. It could also include a possible offer for or a possible sale of its shareholding in Manchester United. Contrary to press speculation, no financial adviser has as yet been appointed in connection with its investment in Manchester United. The Malcolm I. Glazer Family Partnership will make a further announcement when appropriate."

Houston added: "Fans should not be fooled into thinking just because one speculator, one profiteer appears to be less bad than another at any given time there motives are not entirely the same. There are a lot of vultures circling out there. We want to secure the independence of Manchester United for ever."
