The United centre-back was substituted twenty minutes from the end of the 2-2 draw at The Riverside on Sunday with a foot injury and fears were that he may have broken a bone in his toe.
However, having undergone a scan on the injury on Monday it has been confirmed that there is no break although no confirmation on how long he will be sidelined has been determined.
A United spokesperson told the club's official website: "Rio went for a scan on Monday and we can confirm that he has not suffered any break."
Ferdinand is not likely, however, to have recovered in time for United's quarter final 2nd leg tie against Roma at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
