Newcastle in talks to sign Man Utd goalkeeper Dean Henderson

Newcastle are in talks with Manchester United over a deal for England international goalkeeper Dean Henderson, 90min understands, but the make-up of any transfer is yet to be agreed.

The 25-year-old has made it clear to United he wants regular first-team football - something he knows he is not going to get at Old Trafford, having lost the battle for the number one shirt to David de Gea.

Henderson signed a new long-term contract in 2020, and he still has three years left on that deal, but United are ready to sanction his exit.

Interest from Newcastle is nothing new. The Magpies made a move in January to try take Henderson on loan but a move failed to materialise, but Newcastle have remained keen on a move for the goalkeeper.

90min confirmed last month that a new goalkeeper was a priority for Eddie Howe. Scouts were also looking at Arsenal's Bernd Leno, who has lost his place to Aaron Ramsdale, but the boss has now approved a move for Henderson, who is understood to have made it clear that he would be happy with the move.

However, as yet the clubs have not agreed terms on a deal, with a primary issue being United's desire to sell permanently and Newcastle's preference for a loan move.

Newcastle are understood to have been informed that the Premier League intend to scrutiny their spending following their takeover last year - led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund - and club officials are reluctant to commit to a sizeable number of permanent deals.

A similar technique is being used in negotiations for Reims' Hugo Ekitike - a loan with a mandatory purchase option - but United are yet to agree to such terms. Sources close to the Old Trafford side have confirmed that they expect to offload Henderson one way or another this summer.

Henderson is desperate to regain his spot in the England setup ahead of the World Cup later this year and is ready to leave his boyhood side in search of first-team football, but talks remain ongoing over a possible exit.
