Former player Neville is keen to remain having been brought back to Old Trafford as first-team coach by then manager David Moyes last summer.
Van Gaal, appointed earlier this week, has already installed Ryan Giggs as his assistant boss and two other coaches in goalkeeping specialist Frans Hoek and opposition scout Marcel Bout will arrive with him.
That has left uncertainty over Neville's position - and that of Moyes' goalkeeping coach Chris Woods - and the former Everton captain is hoping for good news.
Neville told Sky Sports News: "I hope so
It is business as usual as far as I am concerned.
"I was first-team coach last year
I am not sure what my role will be next year but over the next couple of weeks I will find out about my role and hopefully I will be involved at Man United."
Neville is yet to speak to Van Gaal, who will not officially take charge until after his duties as Holland manager end after this summer's World Cup.
Asked if Van Gaal had contacted him, Neville said: "No
There are obviously processes in place and he will have his structures and team, and you just hope you are a part of that.
"He is obviously a busy man with Holland at the World Cup
It is good to get the new manager announced and the club can start looking forward again and looking to improve on last season."
Neville worked under Giggs for the final four games of last season as the Welshman took over as interim manager following the sacking of David Moyes.
Giggs also added two other former 'Class of '92' team-mates to the first-team backroom staff in Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes for those matches.
It is also still to be determined whether they might be involved under Van Gaal.
Neville, 37, said: "It was great fun but there was a real seriousness about it
We had a big job to do.
"We had to take the team to the last four games
Ryan obviously was manager - Ryan's first shot at management
We had to support him.
"We had to coach the team, it was serious business.
"We do love Man United but that doesn't give us a divine right to be in and around the club
We have got to make sure we produce and do our job well to have the chance to stay on."
Whether or not Neville does stay with United, he firmly believes that Van Gaal is a good appointment.
United have turned to the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss after a frustrating season in which they finished seventh in the Barclays Premier League and failed to qualify for a European competition.
Neville said: "He has got massive experience and he has obviously coached and managed some of the biggest clubs in the world.
"He comes with a fantastic pedigree.
"It is interesting times ahead
We have got to make sure we improve on last season
"Last season was disappointing and hopefully with the new manager we can get back to challenging for league titles and European medals."
