MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY

Bryan Robson doesn’t want to see Keano retire at the end of next season, "He has had a hip operation and a cruciate knee ligament injury. So he is the only one who knows how it affects him and he will make up his own mind about what to do. But when you watch him play at the moment, it doesn't look as though anything has affected him.

"He is a fitness fanatic. As long as he is playing to a high standard he should go on as long as he can because there is nothing better than playing.

"What Keane does is he is really demanding in what he expects from his team-mates. When he arrived at United there were people around like Paul Ince and Steve Bruce. The three of them are all people who would shout a lot.

"Keane gets them organised on the pitch. When people are getting slack he will have a real go at them. That what his strength is. When he is not there you don't really have people who can get a grip of the team. Rio Ferdinand has the ability to do that. He has got to take it on board and learn from Keane. Then if Keane does decide to retire or move on you will have a player in the squad who will do it."

Meanwhile, Keane has played down any comparisons between himself and Robson, "It's not me trying to be humble, but I wouldn’t say I was up with Robbo, far from it. Robbo was a player I’d admired growing up so I was delighted to meet him and play with him but I also wanted him out.

“You have to remember that I was joining a winning team. No disrespect to the team he joined, but Robbo dragged United single-handedly to many a victory. I think Robbo was one of the people who recommended I come here - that's a quality I admire in him because he knew it’s about what is best for the team.

"We’ve got young players now and they want me out. But I’m not ready yet."
