Clive Tyldesley in the Telegraph remembers his undercover
journey to the Old Den:
‘The only time I ever wore a jacket and tie to a football
match as a fan was at Millwall in 1974.
‘A recently relegated Manchester United played a Monday
night game at The Den to which visiting supporters were not
invited. I watched in disguise and in respectful silence as
my team (the secret is out!) won with a dubious penalty.
‘I tried to appear as disgusted with the decision as the
Deptford docker in whose shadow I stood as Gerry Daly
despatched the spot-kick, then I bragged about my
experiences at the next United home game. I felt like I had
been behind enemy lines on a dangerous commando mission. By
the time I had finished, Cold Blow Lane was Dunkirk and
every Millwall fan had been carrying an automatic weapon and
a face scar.’
