Mike Phelan signs Man Utd contract extension

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has signed a new contract with the club which will run until 2024.

The 59-year-old rejoined the club's coaching staff in December 2018 following the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager.

Phelan was later appointed as the Norwegian's assistant at the end of the 2018/19 season, a role he previously held between 2008 and 2013 during Sir Alex Ferguson's final years at the club.

Simon Stone of BBC Sport reports that Phelan's stay at Old Trafford is set to continue after signing a new contract until 2024. This means that Phelan's deal now matches the length of Solskjaer's, which the boss penned back in July.

Despite only signing an extension in recent months, the United manager is under pressure to deliver this season. Solskjaer's men have won two of their last six matches, and just three from seven since re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

United were held to a 1-1 draw with Everton at the weekend and have dropped to fourth in the Premier League table. They travel to Leicester City after the international break before hosting Atalanta in the Champions League.
