Fergie:

"Exeter have been fantastic and handled themselves very well. They had great spirit and showed every small club that if they pull a big team in the third round they can give it a go. The whole experience was a great reminder of the romance of the FA Cup.

“Exeter have had a great day and a great couple of weeks. I was listening to the radio this morning and it was nothing but Exeter City. It was a reminder to everyone that cup ties like this at hostile grounds with capacity crowds can be difficult.

"They had a lot of `ooh and aah' moments but I wouldn't say they had any clear-cut chances. What they did do was work incredibly hard. They showed fantastic energy to last the distance and they also defended really well.

"We are in the next round and that's what matters, but it is a great reminder of the romance of the FA Cup. They had a lot going for them in the second half and we had to defend. When you are 1-0 up anything can happen. I wasn't really worried. We could have won by many more goals.

"Cup games in January are played in all different types of conditions and it lends itself to a shock. There is nothing in tablet about how a Cup game goes. It's about luck and determination. Exeter have shown every small club they can make it their day.

"There is no point saying we were brilliant or anything like that. We missed too many chances. We could have won by more and at 1-0 they always felt they had a chance. We all watched the Liverpool game on Tuesday night and that was a reminder to everyone of what can happen in cup football. I guess this was another one. At least we have a home tie now against Middlesbrough. We have some important games before that but overall we are happy with the tie.

"These games have been absolutely fantastic for Exeter and for football. It is brilliant for them. It was a big drop when they went out of the Football League but maybe these games can help lift them up again."

Gary Neville:

"We knew when we drew the game two weeks ago that we were going to cause ourselves a few problems by having to come down here and tonight we had a lot of problems. Anybody who has played professional football knows that when you come down to play at any place it is difficult. Exeter put up a good display over the two games and probably deserved a little bit more for their work. But we got through it and that is the main thing. We play Middlesbrough a week on Saturday and we just have to put this behind us now."

Alex Inglethorpe:

"I'm very proud of the team, after the early goal you might have feared the worst but we were solid and kept going which was very important. We took some risks towards the end because it's a one-off game - you may as well lose 2-0 as 1-0 in the end.

“We did try to give it a go and I hope the crowd are as proud as I am. We just tried to do our best. We did have enough good chances... but Man Utd deserved to win the tie, no question.

“You go into every game thinking you can win, so it is disappointing that we haven't managed to achieve that. But overall, I don't think you can deny Manchester United have been the better side. They had more of the ball, created more chances and eventually scored the goals. They deserve to go through and everyone at this club wishes them good luck in the next round.”
