Ferguson:

"The Premier League did not do us any favours with the kick-off time but we dug deep and saw it through, which is all you can ask for at this stage of the season. I don't think there will be many more twists and turns now.

"If we had lost today, it would have given Chelsea a lot of confidence but we have both had hard seasons and maybe that is why we were both knocked out of the European Cup this week.

"It was a great example of human courage.

"It wasn't a great performance and you haven't seen the real Manchester United because there was tiredness there. Hopefully we'll get the result we want tomorrow, but if we have to go to Chelsea [for it], we'll look forward to that."

About the stamp:

"The lad stamped on Ronaldo. It was also a clear penalty for us. Cristiano took it well, as he has done all his penalties this season.

"He was absolutely fantastic after he got a bad challenge in the first minute of the game. Rob Styles got into a position but he's left a lot of things go.

"But he (Ronaldo) has been fantastic all season, the boy."

Ferguson was going to bring on Solskjaer if Van der sar did not save the penalty:

"Ole is one player in the world who you can bring on to score a goal. Thankfully, Edwin showed his experience and made the save."

His plans for today?:

"I won't be watching the game on TV.

"I was going to see Gerard Pique play but there has been a problem with the flights, so I will go for a game of golf instead. [United defender on loan at Real Zaragoza]

"Hopefully Arsenal will get the result we want tomorrow but if we have to go to Chelsea to get something on Wednesday, we will look forward to it."

Carrick on MUTV:

"Every time we've had a setback this season we've bounced back. It was a tough game but we knew it was going to be, especially after the other night.

"The incentive was there for us and thankfully we pulled it off. The other night takes a lot out of you anyway, but playing in heat like today, in a derby with everything else that's at stake, you've got to pull on everything really.

"We even needed Edwin to save a penalty but the lads have always said we do it the hard way. This year's no different.

"You don't need any motivation for that type of game, you know exactly what you've got to do.

"It was a matter of going out there and getting the job done. We've done that now so we can relax a bit."

Pearce:

"We had every opportunity to equalise and push on but we missed it.

"Sometimes in the game things contrive against you if you don't take the opportunities in front of you.

"We've not achieved where we'd like to achieve and our Achilles heel has been putting the ball in the net.

"We've not hurt teams up front and that's something we'll need to address in the summer.

"Quite often this season when we've come out and chased games we've conceded more chances.

"When we've come out to chase the game we've looked more likely to lose it than win it.

"(But today) we've stayed in it for most of the game against - after this result - probably the champions of England."

About Ball's stamp on Ronaldo:

"People have mentioned the tackle to me and are not particularly happy with what happened.

"But I have not seen that. Certain things happen in games and people pick up on them.

"I will review the incident on video and will make any decision from there.

"I am sure the authorities will do whatever they do.

"We often leave decision to referees and officials above them. It will be down to them."
