MATCH PREVIEW

Fergie:

"We wanted to have second place sealed by now.

"But Liverpool's consistency means it has gone down to the wire.

"I suppose it is typical of United. We always tend to do things the hard way but I am sure we will get the right performance.

"We have an opportunity against Charlton to get three points to secure second place and automatic entry to the Champions League.

"The alternative is not worth thinking about.

"I always feel it is quite important to win your last home game of the season but this is a massive one for us.

"There is no question we have to finish second and hopefully a good, determined performance will get us there.

"We're disappointed we haven't scored a goal in our last two home games, especially as we had a great run going and the form and confidence of the team was good.

"We were the only team who put a bit of life back in the Premiership title race in the last few weeks, in terms of trying to catch Chelsea."

Van der Sar:

"Of course we miss Wayne, any team would, but that is an easy excuse.

"Don't forget, we drew against Sunderland at home when he was in the side.

"We have a lot of players other than Wayne Rooney who can come in and be capable of doing a job.

"It would have been much better if we had won on Monday but the fact is we didn't. But we are still one point ahead of Liverpool and we know what we have to do to get that second spot.

"It would not be good to have to play qualifying matches for the Champions League so soon after the World Cup," added van der Sar.

"That is why finishing second is so important for the club and the players."

Ruud:

'There is still a massive part of the season to complete because second place is important to us.

'But looking back, this season has been disappointing overall.

'Everyone knows expectations at this club are high but that is something we have to deal with. We have had to deal with it over the last couple of years and we have to do so again.

'The Sunderland and Middlesbrough performances were both disappointing.

'We have had two goalless draws in a row at home now, so we have to do better against Charlton.

'It is their manager's last match, which should help raise their game, and they have nothing to lose, so they will probably be able to play quite freely.

'But we have to handle that and make sure we get those three points.'

BBC:

Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo are minor doubts for Manchester United after the pair picked up knocks in Monday's draw with Middlesbrough.

With Wayne Rooney missing, Giuseppe Rossi is likely to be on the bench but Gabriel Heinze will not start.

Charlton defender Luke Young misses Alan Curbishley's final game in charge with an ankle problem.

Jerome Thomas, Marcus Bent and Jay Bothroyd are injured while defender Hermann Hreidarsson is suspended.
