Roberto Mancini will step up Manchester City's search for a new defender if Vincent Kompany loses his red card appeal. Mancini has scouted Manchester United target Mats Hummels as a replacement for his skipper, who will no doubt go on to lead the defence with Kompany, if City are successful in their hunt.
City have appealed over the straight red Kompany was shown for a tackle on Arsenal?s Jack Wilshere during their 2-0 win at the Emirates on Sunday.
An FA disciplinary panel are unlikely to overturn referee Mike Dean?s decision, which means the champions' captain will serve a minimum three-game ban.
That would rule Kompany out of the Premier League fixtures against Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, as well as City?s FA Cup fourth round tie away to Stoke or Crystal Palace.
In a rather desperate and costly act to replace their skipper, Mancini will now have to put his faith in youngster Matija Nastasic and Kolo Toure.
Manchester United have been linked with the Borussia Dortmund centre back for some time now, and City would no doubt love to get one up on their city rivals.
