Ozil joined the current La Liga champions two years ago from Werder Bremen after impressing in the German league, but the player is no longer first choice in Madrid's midfield under Jose Mourinho with 'the special one' preferring Luka Modric.
Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly asked to be kept informed of any developments concerning the 24-year-old and would be at the front of the queue if the Spanish decide to sell.
Ferguson is still on the hunt for a successor to 38-year-old Paul Scholes, who is set to retire for the second time in his Manchester United career at the end of this season.
Manchester United will likely have to pay double the ₤12 million fee Madrid agreed with Bremen two seasons ago but after missing out on Hazard and Lucas in the summer United will have funds available for the player and with Ozil currently earning around ₤110,000 a week at the Bernabeu his wages would fit well into United's current pay structure.
