The charge refers to the aftermath of Roberto Firmino’s eventually goal for Liverpool, which saw a number of United players angrily surround referee Craig Pawson.
An FA statement explains, “Manchester United FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20. It is alleged that the club failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 26th minute of the Premier League fixture against Liverpool FC on Sunday.”
The official had waved play on when goalkeeper David de Gea felt he was fouled in an aerial challenge with Virgil van Dijk, with Firmino then bending an effort into the far corner when the home side quickly recycled possession.
De Gea in particular was apoplectic with Pawson for not signalling a foul and was shown a yellow card for the aggressive manner in which he voiced his dissent.
The incident was subsequently referred for a VAR review and the goal ruled out because it was adjudged by the officials that the United goalkeeper had indeed been fouled.
Liverpool were already leading the contest thanks to an earlier goal from Van Dijk. And while United had chances of their own to equalise, notably from Anthony Martial in the second half, Liverpool sealed the victory in the closing stages through Mohamed Salah.
The disallowed Firmino goal sparked plenty of controversy and debate, particularly on social media, as to whether it was a foul or not a foul on De Gea in the build up.
Liverpool moved 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League table as a result of the victory and manager Jurgen Klopp described it as a ‘relief’ to have come away with the points.
