Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi has joined Championship club Birmingham on loan for the remainder of the season in a bid to gain more first-team experience.
Having progressed through United’s youth ranks, Mengi is highly rated at Old Trafford and made his first-team debut in the Europa League shortly after turning 18 in the summer of 2020.
Mengi, still only 19, went on to play nine times during a loan at Derby in the second half of last season and has made one senior United appearance so far in 2021/22, coming off the bench in the Champions League against Young Boys last month.
The teenager has spent most of this season captaining the club’s Under-23 team.
He now joins a Birmingham side in the bottom half of the Championship table and is expected to have invaluable first-team exposure while with the Blues.
Mengi is the second United youngster to join Birmingham on loan this season, with winger Tahith Chong making the same switch in the summer. However, the Dutchman, who has played 13 times, hasn’t featured since October because of a groin injury and is undergoing treatment in Manchester.
“It was important for me to try and find what was best for me, which is here at Blues and to just kick on and get as many games under my belt and improve as much as I can as a player and as a person,” an eager Mengi told BCFC.com.
“As soon as I heard about Blues, I was straight on the phone to Chongy and he told me it is great, the lads are great, I am going to enjoy it, everyone is a nice person, so I am just looking forward to it.”
