Manchester United have confirmed Mason Greenwood “will not return to training or play matches until further notice” after allegations of assault were made against him by a woman.
“We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media," a club spokesperson initially said after 20-year-old Greenwood was accused of physically harming a woman.
"We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind," the club added.
Later on Sunday, United confirmed that "Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice."
The allegations levelled at Greenwood included photographs, which showed a woman with multiple injuries, video and an audio recording, all of which have now been deleted from Instagram.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are aware of the allegations, saying in a statement: "Greater Manchester Police is aware of images and videos circulating on social media. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
Nike, who sponsor Greenwood, also responded to the allegations, telling the The Athletic: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
Greenwood made his first team debut for United in 2019 and has since made 129 appearances for the club, scoring 35 times. He is contracted to the club until 2025.
