The Italy Under-21 came into the side last term and grabbed important goals against Villa and then Sunderland, which helped United onto their 18th league title.
But a dip in form and a calf injury has meant that the youngster has not been able to grab the headlines this season so far, he didn’t make his first appearance of the season until last week when he came on as a late sub for Ryan Giggs in the 4-0 hammering of Bolton.
Ferguson is convinced the teenager has a big part to play over the coming weeks.
"Macheda has had a terrible season with injuries," said Sir.
"But he came back on Saturday and I am delighted about that because without question he is one of the most exciting young strikers I have had in my time at Manchester United.
"His ability about the box for a young player is outstanding."
