MANCHESTER United legend George Best is to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at next weekend's BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

The 37-times capped Northern Ireland international will receive the award at the annual television ceremony, to mark his distinguished playing career.
Best, 56, won two championships and a European Cup as one of the inspirational members of the 1960s Manchester United team.

"Its lovely to be recognised in this manner so long after having finished my football career," Best said.

"I feel I achieved everything I dreamed of as a child. I also feel I played in the best team in Europe if not the world with some very special players."

BBC Choice are to run all night on saturday with a Best theme, five programmes in a row dedicated to him.
