The Scotsman:

Clyde 1 - McGregor 76
Manchester United 5 - Kleberson 31, Scholes 48, van Nistelrooy pen 57, 84, Miller 78

The taste of Wimbledon's strawberries lingers, Tiger is still taming the Old Course and England's cricketers have yet to lock horns with Australia in the battle for the Ashes.

Yet football is back with its annual round of pre-season friendlies now well under way.

These games have a tendency to have limited value for all but the participants and interest only for the most fanatical of supporters but at least this improbable pairing had real intrigue.

How on earth would Graham Roberts hastily assembled squad of youngsters and journeymen cope with the multi-millionaire superstars of Man U?

There was even silverware up for grabs in the shape of the Optical Express Challenge Cup while Bully Wee boffins reminded us that their team had a proud record to protect.

but a glimpse of the likes of van Nistelrooy made it instantly apparent that the task would become no easier.

Indeed, the big Dutch striker took just three minutes to help set up Scholes for another one of those trademark finishes.

Van Nistlelrooy then converted a soft penalty before Clyde fans were given something to cheer when Neil McGregor pulled one back.

It only served to stir the giants with ex-Celt Liam Miller and van Nistlerooy completing the masterclass.

Clyde: Cherrie, McGregor, Malone, Higgins, McKeown, McHale, Bryson, O'Donnell, Arbuckle, Hunter, Bouadji. Substitutes: Brawley, Bradley, Dick, Masterton, McGowan, Miller, Hilland, Hutchison.

Manchester United: Van der Sar, McShane, Richardson, Pique, Ferdinand, Fletcher, Jones, Kleberson, Rossi, Saha, Park Ji-Sung

The Sunday Times:

In what was perhaps a message to Rio Ferdinand, who continues to stall on signing a new contract despite United offering him £100,000 per week, Ferguson handed the captain’s armband to Darren Fletcher ahead of the central defender in the first half. The small Broadwood stadium echoed with boos when Ferdinand touched the ball.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice, once from the penalty spot, while Paul Scholes and the former Celtic star Liam Miller were also on target for United. Neil McGregor scored a late consolation goal for Clyde.

The Sunday Telegraph:

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand came under fire as the real Manchester United started their pre-season programme with a 5-1 win at Scottish club Clyde.

The England defender, who has yet to sign a new contract at Old Trafford, found himself jeered and subjected to shouts of "greedy" from travelling fans.

But the United supporters, who stuck by Ferdinand during his eight-month ban for missing a drugs test, still had plenty to cheer with goals coming from Kleberson, Paul Scholes, Liam Miller and a Ruud van Nistelrooy double.

Quieroz:

On Rio boos: "That's not a concern. "It's just a reaction from some fans and no more so it will not bother him."

On injuries: "We have a decision to make regarding those players (Keane and Brown. We want all our best players to travel to Asia and the only players we can't take them is because they are injured. At this time of the season it is important for the players to take care and that tour is going to be long with four games in nine days so they need to be right. The most important thing is for players to get treatment and that's the only reason that they won't go."

Fergie:

"It was a good work-out for us - the most important thing for the players is to get their first game behind them and work hard.

"We did that - and I think they enjoyed it too - 22 players have had 45 minutes of football today.

"They played some great football - they are a very, very young team, worked very hard and were very committed.

"It was nice they got a goal and I hope they do well in the future. They were a great club when I was a lad and they can go on from here."
