In an adaptation taken from his book The Autobiography by Roy Keane the
NOTW sheds light on his problem with alcohol
KEANO ADMITS TO PROBLEM
Speaking exclusively to the News of the World, the star who led United to
league, FA Cup and European Cup glory admitted his booze binges turned
him into a wildman.
"It's a big problem I have, a major problem," he said. "I do try to control my
temper.
"But when I look back on some of the stuff I've done I ****ing cringe.
"I don't think I had a choice but to stop drinking if I wanted to carry on playing.
"There's a list of people I've let down over the years and it hurts."
After an incident on a night out with the United squad Keane ended up behind
bars. He said
I explained what happened at the police station but after nine hours on the
tear I didn't make a convincing witness. They put me in a cell."
"My first thought was for Theresa and the kids. Then I thought about my family
in Cork, reading the headlines, fretting, getting looks from neighbours, having
to endure the embarrassment. Remorse and shame sober you up.
"Then there was the club, facing a huge game with the captain in a cell for
being drunk and disorderly. It was a set-up but that was no excuse. I was a
daft ****er."
