Having brought the players back to pre-season training early in order to prepare them for the start of the season Ferguson’s plans are in tatters.

From The Telegraph:

‘Manchester United's problems mounted last night when it was revealed that their captain, Roy Keane, had broken a bone in a foot.

The influential midfielder is expected to be out for two months, a huge blow for United, who have already lost defender Gabriel Heinze until April because of a knee injury.

Keane only returned from a hamstring injury yesterday in the goalless Premiership draw at Liverpool. But the 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international was forced to hobble off in the final minute after a challenge by Luis Garcia, the Liverpool midfielder.

Keane, who has fractured the third metatarsal bone in his left foot, is expected to miss up to eight Premiership matches, including the home game with Chelsea on Nov 6, and at least four Champions League group fixtures.

In addition to Keane and Heinze, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is without Gary Neville (groin), Wes Brown (Achilles tendon), Quinton Fortune (hamstring), Louis Saha (knee) and long-term casualty Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (knee).’
