Jamaica urging Mason Greenwood to switch nationalities from England

Jamaica are hoping to convince Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood to reject an international future with England and instead sign up with them.

The Reggae Boyz have been aggressively hunting dual-nationality players to bolster their side, recently convincing West Ham United forward Michail Antonio to join an international team which already featured Ravel Morrison, Andre Gray and Bobby Reid.

Their next hope, according to the Telegraph, is to convince Greenwood to switch sides - with a senior source in the Jamaican Football Federation making it clear that the door is always open for the United youngster.

Greenwood has already made one appearance for England - September 2020's 1-0 win over Iceland - but players under 21 years old are permitted to switch teams as long as they have played fewer than three international games, meaning Greenwood could still switch to Jamaica, for whom he is eligible through his parents.

There's no indication that Greenwood will take Jamaica up on their offer. He represented England at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 level before making his senior debut, becoming the seventh United player to make their England debut as a teenager.

However, Jamaica's optimism likely stems from Greenwood's exile from the England setup. He was sent home from Iceland after breaking COVID-19 rules alongside Phil Foden and has not been seen in an England shirt since.

Foden was kept away for just one international window, but Greenwood was made to wait longer and only returned to the fray this summer, before an injury forced him to withdraw from their provisional Euro 2020 squad without even making an appearance.

Greenwood is the most high-profile player to be targeted by the Jamaican FA, who are looking build an imposing side ahead of launching their campaign to qualify for the 2022 World Cup later this year.

Max Aarons, Demarai Gray, Ivan Toney, Liam Moore, Isaac Hayden, Ethan Pinnock, Mason Holgate, Rolando Aarons, Curtis Tilt, Jamal Lowe, Amari'i Bell and Kasey Palmer have all been targeted, with a handful of those choosing to sign on for the Reggae Boyz.
