Two ex-Reds return to Old Trafford tonight, with Paul Ince
admitting he would rather be somewhere else:
INCE AND IRWIN RETURN
“Alex Ferguson will look at our results and probably play
his reserve team. Actually, probably his youth side!
Everyone will expect us to get beaten by eight or nine
goals. I think it would be fair to say we’d rather be
playing someone else next but we still need to get Saturday
out of the system.
“It’s usually a good time to play United, early in the
season but they’ve had a great start and won at Newcastle.
We know we are the underdogs and if we get beaten, we get
beaten. But what we need to show is determination and
character.”
Ince is looking forward to playing against his mate Ryan
Giggs, and is hoping for a good welcome from the Old
Trafford fans:
“We were in Portugal together on holiday when he was getting
all that rubbish from the fans. We speak all the time. When
the fixtures came out, we immediately noticed when we were
playing and it’s been a case of ‘see you on August 27th.
“Hopefully Denis and I will get a good welcome but I’ve been
back to Old Trafford a few times so it’s not anything new.”
Denis is also looking forward to returning to United:
“Going back to Old Trafford will be special for me — I hope
it doesn’t turn into a nightmare. Depending on which side
I’m asked to play on, I’ll be facing either Ryan Giggs or
Cristiano Ronaldo. This Ronaldo kid looks a bit different.
Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t pay £12m for a teenager lightly,
so you know he is going to be extraordinary.”
Fergie reckons that only one of them will get a good
reception, no prizes for guessing which:
“Paul will never get the kind of reception that Denis will —
simply because he signed for Liverpool.
“There is such an intense rivalry between United and
Liverpool that the day Incey signed for them was a sad day
for United fans.
“He did not give the same service as Denis, who will be
welcomed back. People were surprised when I sold Incey but I
am not afraid of taking touch decisions when I feel they are
for the good of the club.”
