"We brought him back too early from pre-season training - he only had three days preparation and a groin injury."
He has started six of United's eight Premiership matches and played two games in the Champions League but Ferguson insists the midfielder will soon be back to his best.
"What the fans have seen is not the real Paul Scholes but he'll be fine in a few weeks," he added.
