Shareholders United has described as "laughable" the latest attempts at a "dirty tricks smear campaign" against the organisation by Malcolm Glazer in his bid to take over the club.
The editor of the website of the official Tampa Bay Buccaneers Supporters Club (UK) (www.BucPower.com), Paul Stewart, emailed SU on February 15th 2005 to warn:
"Your club is for sale and will be bought by Glazer. And there is nothing you can actually do to stop it. What you should be more concerned about is the story that one of the Sunday papers is about to run about the monies that have been scammed from unsuspecting United fans by Shareholders United."
The TBBSC(UK) boasts on its website that it is an "official booster club of the Buccaneers" that "enjoys a fantastic working relationship with them", and is rewarded with the "best seats in the house", adding that those running it are "on pretty good terms with the Glazers". It also says "Paul Stewart [is responsible for] the day-to-day running of the Bucs UK."
SU vice-chair Oliver Houston blasted: "This desperate threat of a dirty tricks smear campaign by the Glazer camp is laughable. SU is an open, democratic, respectable organisation with 22,000 committed and active members and we are backed by a number of highly regarded individuals and institutions. We have nothing to hide, in stark contrast to the shadowy way Glazer has gone about his sordid takeover attempt. But these despicable and underhand tactics come as no surprise, given that a US Judge famously described Glazer as ‘a snake in sheep’s clothing’."
