GLAZER CHALLENGED

From The Scotsman:

Tony Lloyd (Manchester Central), a shareholder in the club, raised the issue using Parliamentary privilege at Commons question time.

He unsuccessfully urged Sports Minister Richard Caborn to join in condemning the US financier's "predatory activities" on the club.

Mr Lloyd said: "Obviously control, whether in the professional or the amateur game, of major sporting bodies has enormous importance to the sporting public and the community generally. Control of a company like Manchester United, in which I have a small shareholding, would have enormous impact."

"The present rumours of takeover by Malcolm Glazer from the United States - a man who was described in one case in the states as a 'snake in sheep's clothing' when he was before the courts when he was trying to take over Harley Davidson or a man who is presently being investigated by the securities and exchange commission in the US - is hardly a fit and proper person to take forward the governance of a football club. Would you be able to say something on the record that might dissuade Mr Glazer from his predatory activities?"

Mr Caborn said: "I can't comment on the descriptions given for Mr Glazer.

"But I can reassure you that the Premier Division and the Football League themselves have taken quite significant strides in the recent past to make sure there is good governance and having fit and proper persons on the board. In that sense you can be reassured and it is now, I think, more stringent than company law is in terms of the placement of directors. I was pleased to read the statement made by the chief executive of Manchester United, David Gill, when he said any decision would be taken reflecting both present shareholders and future shareholders. I think that is important to a club like Man United who have a tremendous role to play not just in the game, but in the community as well."
