GEORGE HAD THEM SCARED
George Best lost so much blood during his liver transplant that surgeons
feared he would die, it emerged today.
The former Manchester United ace had 40 pints of blood pumped into his
body - five times the usual amount required - during the operation in London
last Tuesday.
Because the 56-year-old's liver was so badly damaged, his blood wasn't
clotting properly, causing him to haemorrhage. He is said to have suffered so
much internal bleeding during the 10-hour operation that surgeons had to fight
to stabilise him before they could even begin removing his liver.
It has also been revealed that medics were stunned when they saw just how
bad his liver was. Doctors have told Best he would have lasted only another
three months without the transplant.
