GEORDIES GETTING GIDDY

Graeme Souness, "We will be confident going into this game. It is a one-off cup tie and anything can happen. We know that we can be more than a match for anyone. We have proved that already this year by beating Chelsea earlier in the competition. It is going to be a great tie and one our fans will be up for.

"If we are going to win the cup, we have got to beat the best and that is how it is turning out. It is a tough draw, but anyone would be at this stage. But it is an exciting one and one that the players will relish. The last time we played Man United, we were very unlucky to lose.

"We were drawing 1-1 and we were on the front foot in the game and looking to push on and win it. But they got ahead with a disputed penalty. This is the club's first trip to Cardiff and we want to give the fans a good weekend down there."

Alan Shearer, "Defeat is not something I think of before a ball is kicked. It could not be any harder, I know that. I have a huge respect for everything about Manchester United. But it is a tie we can win. I said it would be tough whoever we got and I believed that.

"Now if we win the cup no one can deny that we have won it the hard way. We have already faced Chelsea, an in-form Tottenham side and now we have the likely favourites Manchester United in the semi final.

"It will be a huge game, massive. I'm sure the whole of the country will be excited by this one. I said before the competition began that if we are going to win it we have to play one of the big three in the final. And that is how it could turn out now. In fact, we could have had to beat all of them to win the trophy. We are desperate to give it a real go.”

And finally, the ultimate false cliché, Geordie’s are the best fans in the world, "I can promise our fans that we will give it everything - all of the lads are excited by the draw. We are together as a squad and we will certainly be up for it. I just hope Cardiff is a luckier ground for us than Wembley. The Geordie fans will make it seem like a home match. I imagine most of them have already booked up."
