"Chelsea and have their own agenda. We have our own agenda here," Gary told Sky Sports News.
"We're fine and happy with the way we're playing at the moment. Obviously we need to pick up results and we've done that recently, but Monday night was a little bit of a setback for us. We have enough opportunities in the coming weeks to claw points back and make sure we get ourselves in a position to challenge for the championship because that's where we need to be. We have to be challenging for the championship. I think we're capable of challenging. In years gone by, we've been 12 points behind Arsenal and 12 points behind Newcastle. Arsenal were 11 points behind us and we've ended up being hunted down. We've got to put ourselves in a position where we can get ourselves close enough to these teams come March, April and May."
With Chelsea nine- points ahead of United it will take a dip in their form to allow United a chance.
"We have been in that position before and we want to make sure we put ourselves in a position to challenge. If they keep playing as they are for the rest of the season you would have to hold your hands up but whether they will do that remains to be seen. We have to see how Chelsea react in the important months. If they are being hunted by clubs like us, how will they do in April and May? That's the time when you really have to hold your nerve. Everyone is interested to see how Chelsea will react at that point in the season.''
"We are strong enough to catch Chelsea and we are playing well enough."
