GARY NEVILLE, UNSUNG HERO

'With all the hype and hard sell of Wayne Rooney’s exploits at Euro 2004 sometimes people tend to overlook the unsung heroes of teams, Gary Neville certainly falls into that category.

Gary has been outstanding during England’s games at Euro 2004. He’s shown all the qualities you would want from a senior player; he was powerful in the win over Croatia, he has overlapped, got crosses in and defended stoutly.

Where David Beckham has had a quiet spell, Gary Neville has stepped in. Sometimes he has been doing most of the attacking work down England’s right flank. And in terms of his defensive play, he’s always in the right place. He’s had a tremendous tournament so far and he’s shown a real top quality full-back.

It’s one of the great things about Gary Neville; he knows when certain things need to be said, and if he thinks something needs to be said, he will say it. He knows when to control the likes of young Wayne Rooney and when to encourage him.

I think he’s got a future in the game either as a coach or as a manager. He’s got that determination that you need.

With the younger players coming in for United this season, I think that has helped him mature even further as a player. He’s had to take on extra responsibility and he has risen to the task very well.

It’s rare that anybody other than the players who score the goals or produce the magic on the ball get the praise. But Gary Neville deserves credit and in the end that recognition always comes to the good players.
