From The Observer:
If you thought Ken Bates was a tough chairman and Jesús Gil the ultimate autocrat, think again. Alfredo Gonzales - known as Fat Gonzales - has put them both in the shade at the Copa America, the South American continental championship.
Gonzales is president of the Universitario club who play in the aptly named Monumental Stadium in Lima. Until six weeks ago the state-of-the-art, 80,000-capacity venue was due to stage Peru's Copa fixtures as well as at least one of this week's semi-finals and next weekend's final.
But then came Universitario's visit to Cienciano in Cusco, where they had five players sent off. The game was abandoned, the red-card offenders banned for six matches, and in retaliation Gonzales refused to let Peru use his stadium unless the Cusco referee was punished and the bans reduced. The Peruvian Football Federation stood firm and the Copa matches have been moved to Lima's Nacional Stadium, where the capacity is 26,000 lower. The Nacional has hardly changed since football's worst tragedy took place there in 1964, when 300 fans were killed in riots caused by an unpopular decision during a Peru-Argentina international. 'Señor Gonzales is a difficult man,' said a Copa official.
