Sheep chairman Peter Ridsdale returned home early from his holiday in
Monaco yesterday for a meeting with want away central defender Rio
Ferdinand. It was the first time the two had come face to face since Ferdinand
handed in a transfer request earlier in the week. Ridsdale reportedly told him
that United were yet to make an offer that would be seen as acceptable by
Leeds.
FROM MONACO TO RIO
In a statement Ridsdale said: "I met Rio Ferdinand today, and we had
amicable and constructive talks about his future.
"I stressed that we do not wish to sell Rio under any circumstances and would
like to see him fulfil the contract he signed in November 2000.
"I also stressed that Leeds United have not received a bid from any club that
would come anywhere near meeting the valuation we put on a player we
believe to be the world's best defender.
"Rio has assured me that if the position remains as it is he will give his full
commitment as a player and captain to Leeds United."
The saga looks like it could carry on for another few weeks with United now
expected to up their bid to around £28,000,000
