Chelsea were have gone from spending money for fun to counting the
pennies. Fergie like the rest of us saw it coming:
FERGUSON: 'I TOLD YOU SO'
"I said two years ago, when they were all buying to catch us up, that they
might suffer. At United we try to do our best. There is a balance between
improving the squad and making sure we do not go into debt. We have kept
that balance quite well. It has been a reminder of how clubs can overstate
their ambitions."
And on the transfer market:
"The market is so bad you cannot sell anyone. Everybody would like to be
Real Madrid. But though they do not seem to have to worry about debts, other
clubs are feeling them. Nobody is buying throughout Europe now. With the
size of players' salaries, the buying power has gone. It may never come back.
A lot of clubs have been spending money for a few years and now you are
seeing the results of that."
