Fergie on Rooney, “He’s 19. He’s a fiery character, he’s competitive and when he sees an injustice against him, he reacts like that. There was some reason to think it was an unfair booking.
"It's debatable whether it's a booking in the context of a game like that but you can't applaud the referee. I think he (referee) had a choice with the yellow card but he had no choice with the red card. We're a bit disappointed with the referee, but we've had disappointments before with Kim Nielsen but that's European football and you've got to learn from that."
“At the time I thought the sending off was for touching the referee’s arm but I think it was more for clapping him. I think in the context of a game like that the referee picked his prey with the booking. That’s disappointing but you cannot applaud the referee.
“The young man didn’t give himself a chance. But we’ve had disappointments with Kim Nielsen before. He is a young lad and you hope through maturity these things will evaporate. The important thing is to retain his strength and good points and eradicate the bad points.”
Fergie added: “We were getting control of the game at that point. But with 25 minutes to go and down to 10 men we did the job properly in terms of an efficient, sensible performance.
"Villarreal didn't really bother us too much. We defended well in the second half and it was a sufficient performance to get us a reasonable result.
"It looked as if we were starting to control the match. We might have gone on to get a good result for ourselves. It certainly took away one of our best players."
On Heinze, "He will go for a scan but we think it is medial ligament damage. If that is the case, he is going to be out for several weeks.”
And on Edwin Van der Sar, “There is an assured presence behind the back four that is a very important factor. Edwin has vast experience and he is a major contributing factor to what we have achieved this season.”
