FERGIE TO ENHANCE THE SQUAD IN THE SUMMER

summer in the Times.

Sir Alex Ferguson is anxiously awaiting a signal from the
Manchester United board after requesting the funds to buy at
least three top-class players in the summer.

A mobile and creative attacker is the main priority — with
Claudio López, the Lazio and Argentina forward, and
Ronaldinho, of Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil, joining Nihat
in the frame — but Ferguson is also looking for specialist
cover at left back and a new left winger. The mixed signals
he is receiving from Fabien Barthez over his long-term plans
mean that the hunt could yet be expanded to include a new
goalkeeper.

Ferguson’s hand will be strengthened considerably if agents
claiming to be working on his club’s behalf succeed in
finding a buyer for Ryan Giggs. The Wales winger is
attracting firm interest from Inter Milan and his
indifferent form during the past 12 months has prompted the
United manager to consider younger options on the left wing,
including Damien Duff, of Blackburn Rovers.
