The United boss believes that 22-year-old Rooney's goalscoring ratio will only get better as he gets older.
"When players get into their mid-20s they get more consistency ad I expect Wayne's scoring will improve," Fergie has said.
"We've noticed Wayne's scoring goes in bursts and his form increases with that. That's how he's been ever since he arrived here.
"But by the time he gets to his mid-20s you hope the experience he's gathered will help to bring more consistency to his scoring.
"We know he can score goals. It's just a matter of getting that consistency. I've seen some players over the years, like Gary Lineker, hardly kick a ball in a game and score two goals.
"Wayne will get to a period in his mid-20s when he'll score goals even when he's not playing well."
