"The league season has been disappointing.
"When you are at a club with the great traditions of Manchester United, you want to be up there fighting at the top of the league by the end of the season and we have not managed to do it.
"It is hard to put your finger on what has gone wrong. Maybe it is missed chances at times.
"We have outplayed the opposition in certain games and not punished them. There have been others when we have conceded a silly goal and lost.
"We have to get those mistakes out of our game and make sure we punish the opposition when we get the opportunity.
"Certain teams have closed the gap on us. The league table tells you that.
"You have to hold your hands up and say Chelsea have had a great season. You can't argue with their consistency and they are going to finish quite a lot of points in front of the second-placed team.
"But we are confident we can improve next year too. The manager has brought in a lot of young players who have had to fit into the team and I think you will see the benefit of that in our results next season."
