Ferdinand claims he has noticed an increase in the amount of City shirts spotted around Manchester as supporters of the Eastlands club savour their team's most successful period for decades.
And he admits he would love to win the Premier League again this season to stop City supporters "coming out of the woodwork".
The England star's comments are certain to add fuel to an already bitter rivalry, especially with United and City engaged in a tense battle for the title.
United are one point ahead of City at the top of the table with nine games remaining, including a crucial showdown between the old enemies at Eastlands on April 30.
"Walking around in town, you see more and more blue shirts than you probably ever would have seen over the last 10 years," Ferdinand told BBC Sport.
"But success sometimes brings people out of the woodwork. So fingers crossed we can delay that and make sure that we get this title sewn up this season."
