"We can't afford to go trophyless this season. People talk about hunger and we've got to go out and prove we've still got it.

"All our jobs are on the line because we have to go and win a trophy.

"We know what we have to do and the manager will not tolerate anything less than us winning a big trophy this season. We know that from the start of the season and we knew that from the end of last season.

"Certainly the summer just gone for me personally - and not just because of the injury, but missing the World Cup and not having won anything at United - was the worst summer professionally that I've had.

"We have to go and prove it out there. Last season there were large parts of our game that weren't right. It wasn't just the losing of games, but the stupid way we were losing games.

"We can't afford to be trophyless at the end of this season.

"I don't think Arsenal and Liverpool got closer to us, we just fell way below our best. I said at the start of last season that the only way they would win the League was if we dropped our standards, which we did.

"In the past we used to grind and grind away until they cracked and we won the League. But we kept giving away silly goals last season and that was what cost us.

"People have been offering up a million reasons why we didn't win anything last season and they have all been rubbish. The simple reason is that we failed to live up to the standards we've set ourselves in the past. It's as simple as that. No excuses."
