EASY WIN IN SHENZEN

'Even without Heinze and numerous others - including Paul Scholes, who has flown back to Britain to undergo exploratory surgery on a knee problem that is likely to rule him out of the opening weeks of the season - United were far too strong for Shenzen yesterday. Nani, their new signing from Sporting Lisbon, scored on his first appearance in United colours, with Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, John O'Shea, Cristiano Ronaldo and Chris Eagles also on the mark.

'Nevertheless, there is concern over Scholes and Owen Hargreaves, who has yet to figure in three matches on tour because of a knee injury, while Gary Neville and Louis Saha are likely to miss the start of the new season.'

'With Scholes heading for the airport, Ferguson handed his summer signing Nani his debut following his recovery from an ankle injury and the £17.3m arrival from Sporting Lisbon showed enough to suggest that he will give United further attacking options this season.

'The 20-year-old linked well with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo and his pace will certainly trouble English defences. All three players found themselves on the scoresheet but Shenzhen hardly made them work for it.

'Ryan Giggs opened the scoring with a tap-in on 12 minutes before Rooney doubled United's lead with a well-executed chip from 20 yards eight minutes later. Nani then scored with a first-time strike from the edge of the penalty area after being teed up by Giggs.

'With Ronaldo striking a long-range free-kick against the crossbar, further goals in the second half appeared inevitable and O'Shea, Ronaldo and Chris Eagles, who grabbed the goal of the game with a 30-yard volley, completed the scoring.

'Unfortunately for Alan Smith, whose future appears inextricably linked to United's attempt to sign the Argentina international Carlos Tevez, a failure to convert a golden opportunity 15 minutes from time will not have done much to convince Ferguson he can be an effective performer for the Red Devils this term.

'But the manager was not complaining about missed chances after the game. "We are happy with the result and the football we played tonight," said Ferguson.

'"It was very warm out there and the humidity was a bit of a concern, but the players coped with it and quite a few of them have got some football under their belts. That was the whole point of the exercise, so we're happy with it."'
