Donny van de Beek has been told he is 'surplus to requirements' at Manchester United, according to a report.
The Dutchman joined the Red Devils in 2020 to much fanfare, with the team in desperate need of midfield reinforcements.
However, Van de Beek's United career has not quite gone according to plan. He made just four Premier League starts in his debut season, and after failing to impress interim boss Ralf Rangnick last year, was sent on loan to relegation-battling Everton.
The arrival of Erik ten Hag, who coached Van de Beek at Ajax, brought fresh belief that the midfielder would finally break into the United team, but his compatriot has similarly used him sparingly.
Journalist Pete O'Rourke now reports that Van de Beek's services are no longer required at Old Trafford and he could leave in the January transfer window.
Summer signing Christian Eriksen has been preferred at the base of midfield, while Scott McTominay has continued to keep Casemiro out of the starting lineup. Brazil international Fred is also ahead of Van de Beek in the pecking order.
United sit sixth in the Premier League table following Sunday's 6-3 derby loss to Manchester City, and are one of only two top-half sides with a negative goal difference.
