Whether you think he?s got his priorities all wrong or not, you have to admire his steadfast nature and his ?another one can?t hurt? attitude.
The player in question is Robert Lewandowski. Manchester United fans must be sick of the name by now. He?s a player that has been strongly linked to the Red Devils since last summer and his name seems to get brought up in conjunction with United every other week.
And now Ladbrokes have gone as far as to say that Fergie has already secured a five-year deal for Lewandowski. They quote Borussia Dortmund?s sporting director Michael Zorc, claiming that it?s a ?done deal?. United are set to shell out ?12m this January and the Polish striker will make the switch from the Bundesliga to the Premier League.
Fans and pundits alike seem pretty bemused by this transfer. There are plenty of people wondering whether United really need another striker. After all, they?ve got Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez. Signing yet another forward may have a serious effect on the career of local boy and young talent, Danny Welbeck.
On the other hand, I?m pretty staggered by just how good this deal is, if what we?re hearing is true. ?12m for a player of Robert Lewandowski is a bit of a coup for Sir Alex. This isn?t some up-and-comer. This is a striker who has proven himself in both the Bundesliga and at International level. He?s hit his peak and is likely to stay in it for some time now.
This year he has already scored 14 goals in 23 appearances for Dortmund. Last season he scored 30 goals in 47 appearances, leading his club to the Bundesliga title. He?s a winner and a natural goal-scorer, who could go on to be a club legend for Manchester United.
So yes, he?s a signing in an area that Manchester United don?t really need to improve. But does that make him a bad recruit? Absolutely not.
