“What a fantastic game between two great sides played at a
great pace. The second leg could have gone either way. We
created a lot of chances and passed the ball well. We also
counter-attacked well but Manchester United created chances
too and it was a fantastic occasion. We had a two-goal
advantage on aggregate for much of the game but I was always
concerned until the last minute. The main thing was to get
through to the next round and that was what we managed to
do.”

However he felt that the star of the show was Ronaldo:

“Tonight was his night. He proved that with three goals. We
only created three chances for him but he converted all
three of them. He was also a good target-man.”

He refused to be drawn into the reasons for Beckham, a
supposed Madrid target, being dropped:

“That's not something for me to comment on. It is up to Sir
Alex Ferguson. He obviously thought there were other players
better placed on the night to do better.”

Ronaldo himself enjoyed the match:

"I will never forget this night. The important thing though
has not been the goal but the way the team play. The best
four teams from Europe have gone to the semi-finals."
