David de Gea has toasted the positive effect Cristiano Ronaldo is already having at Manchester United, revealing his delight that the forward was 'back at home'.
United shocked the world when they announced Ronaldo would be rejoining the club where he made his name and he got off to the perfect start on Saturday, grabbing a brace in his side's 4-1 win over Newcastle.
That performance will be tough to top, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping he can produce a similar display when he makes his first Champions League appearance since returning against Young Boys on Tuesday night.
Speaking before that game, De Gea revealed what it has been like to have Ronaldo back at the club.
"It’s great to have Cristiano back at home," he said (via the Independent). "I think it shows from the first day when we played at Old Trafford the other day the impact already. He scored two goals, two very important goals for us.
"You know the qualities but I think the experience of Cristiano is amazing. It’s great for us, he’s a legend here at the club already. It’s great to have him back, it’s massive for us."
Ronaldo is not the only impressive signing United made this summer. Long-term target Jadon Sancho also arrived to add more creativity and firepower to the attack, while experienced defender Raphael Varane joined from Real Madrid.
These additions leave the Red Devils better placed than ever to challenge on multiple fronts this season. They are particularly strong in the goalkeeping position with Dean Henderson and another summer arrival, Tom Heaton, hoping to challenge De Gea for minutes this campaign.
Asked about this competition for places, De Gea said: "Well, the thing is, I played here with many great keepers over my career in Manchester. It’s been like Sergio (Romero), (Victor) Valdes, Anders (Lindegaard), it’s been great keepers in the club.
"It’s not always the fight between keepers, it’s fighting between the players. We always try to bring the best players so it’s going to always be fighting for our position.
"That’s Manchester United, try to be ambitious and bring the best players and then try to fight for your position."
