‘Wayne Rooney yesterday told how he wanted to be remembered like George Best after inspiring Manchester United to a fitting tribute to their greatest player.

The England striker scored a stunning goal as Sir Alex Ferguson's side came from behind to win 2-1 at West Ham in their first game since Best's death on Friday.

"I was inspired by him and it's a sad loss for everyone," said Rooney following the victory that lifted the Reds to second in the table, 10 points behind Chelsea with a game in hand.

Rooney added: "George was one of the best players in the world, if not the best.

"I'm sure I've a long way to go before I get to those heights, but hopefully one day people will talk about me like that."
