"There’s no question Alex has four of the best strikers in the business on his books and it’s a real puzzle that things aren’t going their way," Macari told The Sun.
"Look at Van Nistelrooy — only last week he grabbed four against Sparta Prague in the Champions League. Young Rooney notched a hat-trick on his United debut in another Euro match against Fenerbahce. Smithy has found the net seven times so far this season — scoring more than he ever did with his former club Leeds. You can’t really give an opinion about Saha because he’s only just coming back from injury. But the other three have shown the only time scoring has been a problem this season is in the Premiership."
"It’s a puzzle. I think it would be wrong to pick on individuals and point any fingers at either the lads who are there to score goals or the boys who are there to create the chances for them. Everybody knows United are not functioning as a team anything like as well as they can just now. That is a confidence thing but when they start to string a run of results together again, I’m certain the whole thing will click into place once more."
Macari hopes United can launch a challenge for the title but believes that it will take effort and results elsewhere.
"United will have to go on a sensational run of wins and hope Arsenal and Chelsea both slip up along the way. And Fergie’s side can’t afford to hang around if they’re going to do that. They must click into gear quickly — or their Premiership season is going to be done and dusted by Christmas."
