“When you have a sprinter who can reach 100 metres in 12 seconds it is easier to make an impact on his times,” Carlos said. “To bring the sprinter down from 12 seconds to 10.1 or something like that is achievable and can be done a lot quicker. However, if you have a sprinter who can do 9.9 seconds then to make him run 9.7 sometimes you can spend all your life doing it but it can be done. Manchester United is the sprinter who has achieved 9.9 seconds!
“At this club it is not easy to be better and better and better. The magic here is to make things more perfect. But with so many quality people at Old Trafford I think you can make it happen. It is a challenge I am looking forward to. It is not something to fear. Fear is not a word you should have in your dictionary or vocabulary in football.”
“I won't be coming into United and trying to change things immediately. You don't change things because you want to impose yourself or alter things because you want to draw attention to yourself. It is not about me. It is about the club. I haven't come with crazy ideas [are you sure? – you sound pretty mad to us] because I want to promote myself. The manager will make all the final decisions.”
This sounds better but this newshound thinks it still smacks of the ‘I have always been a United fan':
“Other teams have brought in expensive players but they don't have the tradition, roots and culture like here and when you don't have that foundation it is difficult to produce results. Manchester United keep the history but make it work in the present and mix the modern aspects with it. The Scholes, Butts, Giggs and Nevilles carry the fire of the history of this club and then it is special also when you have a manager for 16 years. That is really amazing. With all respect to the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal, Manchester United is recognised as the biggest football family in the world. To be part of this huge family has given me a lot of responsibility.”
